Square Enix has announced Symbiogenesis for release next spring. Square Enix describes it as a ‘digital art collection project’ where NFTs can be collected by players.

Square Enix tells that Symbiogenesis is set in a ‘self-contained world, where characters form a symbiosis and can be collected as digital art’. Those NFTs can then be used for social media profile pictures, as well as in an interactive story set in an “alternative world where the player must unravel a mystery by completing missions.” Somewhat striking is that Square itself does not call it a game.

In a short reveal video on Symbiogenesis social media account There is very little else to see about the project. It was initially thought by some that the horror game Parasite Eve from 1998 was revived with Symbiogenesis, because the meaning of the word would be that two separate organisms are joined together to form one new organism.

Yosuke Matsuda, the CEO of Square Enix, said earlier that he was very positive about NFTs and wanted to invest more in this area. That is remarkable, given that many gamers have recently expressed the necessary criticism of the implementation of NFTs in games. For example, Stalker 2 developer GSC Game World stopped its NFT plans after persistent criticism. Players also appeared to have little interest in the NFTs that were put into Ghost Recon Breakpoint by Ubisoft.
