‘Galaxy Z Flip screen is easy to scratch’ – update
The screen of the Galaxy Z Flip appears to be just as easily scratched as the folding screens of the Galaxy Fold and the Motorola Razr, although Samsung claims to use glass for the Z Flip.
JerryRigEverything’s tests show that the Galaxy Z Flip’s screen can be scratched with fingernails. The YouTube channel also found that editing the screen with its level 2 hardness picks already leaves damage, with deep scratches when using a level 3 point.
That was also the case with the Galaxy Fold and the Motorola Razr, while today’s average smartphones have damage at level 6 and deep scratches at level 7. Hardness picks have several sharp metal tips to test the ‘hardness’ of materials.
The findings make JerryRigEverything question whether the Z Flip has a layer of glass, as Samsung claims, or whether it is a hybrid plastic polymer, mixed or not with microscopic glass particles. Samsung reports to The Verge, among other things, that the screen does contain ultra thin glass.
The company says it is using this for the first time in a smartphone. “The screen can bend, but must be handled with care. The Galaxy Z Flip also has a protective layer on top of the ultra thin glass, as with the Galaxy Fold,” reports Samsung. The company also reports that buyers in the US are occasionally eligible for screen replacements for $119 and free installation of an extra protective layer on the screen.
Update 14.50: PBKreviews confirms that there is a thin layer of glass under the protective layer with the Z Flip.
