Gabe Newell Confirms Valve Is Working On New Single Player Game
Valve CEO Gabe Newell says in an ama on Reddit that the company is working on a single player game. He also says that there is a chance that new games will appear in the Half-Life or Portal universe. The last single player game that Valve released is Portal 2, in 2011.
The question whether Valve is working on a full-fledged single player game, Gabe Newell answers with ‘yes’. Questions about the arrival or status of Half-Life 3 remain unanswered, but the Valve CEO answers in the affirmative when asked whether it is possible that a new game will appear that takes place in the Half-Life or Portal universe.
Valve focuses on “broadening possibilities when it comes to creating experiences,” Newell replies when asked where the company is heading in the future. Investing in hardware is part of that, he says. The new knuckles controller is being developed simultaneously with new VR games, according to Newell. Prototypes of this controller for the HTC Vive were first demonstrated in October last year. It is not known which VR games Valve is working on. The company previously released an extensive tech demo for the HTC Vive with The Lab.
Valve continues to use Source Engine 2 for its games. “We’re using it as the foundation for some unannounced products,” Newell says. He says Valve’s wish is that everyone who works on games within the company will eventually use the same engine.
Portal 2 is Valve’s best single player game, according to Gabe Newell. Dota 2 is his favorite multiplayer game. Half-Life is not his favorite as he was too involved in the development of the game. Newell says it’s easier for him to be a fan of a game he had less influence on.
