Funcom is making at least three games based on Frank Herbert’s Dune universe
Game publisher Funcom, which is known for Conan Exiles and Conan Unconquered, which will be released this year, will be making at least three games based on Frank Herbert’s Dune in the next six years. One is an open world multiplayer game.
A statement accompanying Funcom’s fourth quarter figures said the company has entered into an exclusive partnership with Legendary Entertainment to create at least three Dune games over the next six years. These games should be released for both PC and consoles. One of the games being made is an open world multiplayer game, according to an additional brief statement. Development will start later this year at Funcom’s studio in Oslo. Details about the other games that will be released have not yet been announced.
The Funcom CEO says that working on Dune games is “a dream come true” and that more will be told in the future about the games that appear in the setting of this science fiction universe. Several games have been released in the past based on the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. The games Dune and Dune II date from 1992, followed by Dune 2000 in 1998. Three years later, Emperor: Battle for Dune was released. These are all strategy games, with the latter title being the first Dune game to have a 3d world.
Last year, Funcom released the game Conan Exiles in May, among other things. The single player game Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden followed in December. In the second quarter of this year, Petroglyph Studios and Funcom will release the game Conan Unconquered.
The quarterly figures paint a rosy picture of the publisher. Revenue rose 166 percent to $8.3 million in the last quarter of last year and for the full year 2018, revenue rose 46 percent to $33.8 million. The studio calls 2018 its best year to date.
