Fujitsu and Sun have expanded their Sparc Enterprise server line with a new entry-level model. The Sparc Enterprise M3000 is equipped with a single Sparc64 VII CPU with four cores and comes in a 2U high case.

The Sparc64 VII CPU in the M3000 is clocked at 2.52GHz, has 5MB of L2 cache and can process eight threads simultaneously. The server’s eight dimm slots offer space for up to 32GB and there is room for four SAS hard drives internally, bringing the maximum storage space to 584GB. The M3000 also has four gigabit Ethernet connections and a mini-SAS connection. Fujitsu and Sun have implemented a redundant power supply and cooling system for the M3000.

Optionally, the server can draw its power from two separate power sources to reduce the chance of server downtime. Like the larger M4000, M5000, M8000, and M9000, the M3000 includes Solaris 10 and Xscf hardware and software to manage the server.

The new system is according to the two server manufacturers are especially suitable for single-threaded applications such as databases, ERP and CRM. Customers had requested an entry-level Sparc Enterprise server line to, among other things, “enable incremental application deployment and build a development environment for the larger M8000 and M9000 systems,” according to Sun CEO John Fowler. Due to its smaller size, the M3000 is also suitable for use in data centers, according to Sun.
