Fujifilm resumes black and white film production

Fujifilm has announced that it will resume production of black and white film rolls after the company withdrew from the market in April 2018. Fujifilm said it made the decision because of continued demand for monochrome films among ‘millennials and Generation Z’.

The company will introduce a new roll of film, the Neopan Acros 100II, in the fall, which will be available in both 35mm and 120 formats. According to the manufacturer, the Super Fine-Σ technology ensures that the new film offers finer grain and greater sharpness than the original Neopan 100 Acros. Fujifilm uses ‘substitute raw materials’ for the new roll, because the classic raw materials for the production of black-and-white film are said to have become rarer in recent years.

With the Neopan Acros 100II, Fujifilm is targeting younger consumers, especially millennials and Generation Z, whom the company describes as “the new film enthusiasts.” Because Fujifilm is one of the few remaining film roll producers, this ‘enthusiastic target group’ found it increasingly difficult to find black and white rolls.

The Neopan Acros 100II will first be launched in the fall in the Japanese market and then gradually in the rest of the world.
