Fujifilm introduces cheaper medium format mirrorless camera
Fujifilm has announced the GFX 50R, a mirrorless medium format camera with a 51-megapixel sensor. It is a cheaper version of the existing GFX 50S, the housing resembles that of a rangefinder camera.
In terms of specifications, the Fujifilm GFX 50R is almost the same as the GFX 50S, but the housing is slightly smaller and different in shape. The electronic viewfinder is not on top of the camera, but on the left side of the housing, like a rangefinder. The magnification of the viewfinder is slightly smaller than with the G50S, but the resolution of the OLED panel with 3.7 million pixels is the same.
The GFX 50R uses the same 51.4 megapixel sensor as the G50S. It is a cmos chip with dimensions of 43.8×32.9mm. That’s smaller than the analog medium format, which equates to about 56x56mm, but a lot bigger than full-frame cameras that have a sensor of about 36x24mm.
On the back of the GFX 50R is a tilting 3.2″ touchscreen. It can be folded up and down and not unfolded all the way like the G50S. The housing is sealed against dust and moisture and the camera shoots up to three photos per second Filming is possible in 1080p resolution at 30fps The camera weighs approximately 775 grams with battery and memory card The dimensions are approximately 161x97x66mm.
The device has two card slots, both for SD cards. There is WiFi and Bluetooth available and a USB-C connection. Fujifilm will sell the device from November, in the US the suggested retail price is $ 4500. This makes the introductory price 2000 dollars lower than that of the G50S. Converted with VAT, the price is about 4620 euros.
Fujifilm has also put three new G lenses on the roadmap. It concerns a flat 50 mm f/3.5, a 100-200 mm f/5.6 and a 45-100 mm f/4. The zoom lenses get OIS image stabilization. Converted to 35mm full-frame equivalent, these are lenses with focal lengths of 40mm, 79-158mm and 36-79mm.
Finally, Fujifilm indicates that it is working on a GFX medium-format camera with a 100-megapixel sensor: the GFX 100S. The sensor gets image stabilization and that should enable sharp hand-held photos at the very high resolution, Fujifilm claims. The 100-megapixel camera also gets a 4k movie function, in which you can film at a maximum of 30 fps. The sensor size is the same as current GFX cameras. It is not yet known when the new camera will be released and what it will cost.
