The US Federal Trade Commission would soon be making a decision to prosecute Facebook for violating antitrust laws. Preliminary research has been done, but committee members have yet to vote.

The New York Times states this on the basis of two unspecified sources that are familiar with the conversations. The committee would have met on Thursday to discuss the options. In order to make a decision, three reports have been drawn up on Facebook in recent times, according to The New York Times. Those reports are about Facebook’s alleged violations, the company’s financial situation, and the risks of entering a legal process.

Based on the information gathered, the FTC committee members must make a decision whether Facebook will be prosecuted for abusing its market position. There will be a vote on this soon, but it is not yet clear which decision will be taken.

Facebook wouldn’t be the first major tech company to be targeted by US authorities. In recent years, several investigations have been conducted into tech companies and their power, and recently the US Department of Justice sued Google for alleged abuse of its market position. Incidentally, Facebook also had to deal with the FTC before, after the company was accused of privacy violations.
