French company acquires social platform BeReal for 500 million euros
BeReal has been taken over by the also French company Voodoo. BeReal is a social medium where users have to take photos of themselves and their surroundings at any time of the day. Voodoo pays half a billion euros for the app.
Voodoo says it will continue to invest in BeReal and share knowledge about 'product strategy, growth and infrastructure'. The company wants to further grow the platform with more users. Voodoo also says that with the acquisition it will 'further diversify into consumer apps'.
Founded in 2019, BeReal now has 40 million users, half of whom would use the app at least six days a week. CEO and co-founder Alexis Barreyat will be replaced by Aymeric Roffé, who is currently CEO of Wizz, another social medium of Voodoo. In addition to social media, Voodoo also releases games such as Helix Jump, Mob Control and Block Jam 3D.
The acquired app sends a notification to all users at a random time of the day, who have two minutes to take photos with the front and rear cameras. Then these photos are shared with all friendly users. The app quickly became popular two years ago, but Voodoo acknowledges that growth has now slowed down 'to focus on expanding the infrastructure'.
