Former Microsoft employee is jailed for stealing $ 10 million in credit
A former Microsoft employee has been sentenced to nine years in prison for stealing digital assets from the company. Converted to more than 10 million dollars. The man claimed he was acting in Microsoft’s favor.
The 26-year-old man has been convicted by the Seattle court of 18 crimes, including fraud, identity theft, money laundering and tax fraud. The man initially worked for Microsoft but became an employee of the company in 2016. He worked on Microsoft’s online store and in that capacity had access to currency stored value, or digital credit such as that of gift cards.
He used that access to divert funds. Initially, it was $ 12,000 through his own account, but when he started using coworkers’ accounts, it went up to more than $ 10 million. Among other things, he used the money to buy a $ 1.6 million house and a $ 160,000 Tesla. He converted the amounts he took away into bitcoin to mask the origin. He stated on his tax forms that he had received a gift from a relative worth $ 2.8 million.
The man defended himself during the hearing, stating that he was working on a special project for Microsoft’s benefit. The jury did not agree with that statement and found the man guilty, writes the US Public Prosecutor.
