Ford working on electric pickup truck
Ford is making an electric version of its F-series pickup truck. A CEO said this during the Global Automotive Conference in Detroit, USA. There will be fully electric and hybrid variants.
With the move, Ford wants to make the company ‘future-proof’, Detroit Free Press reports based on a presentation by Ford CEO Jim Farley during the Global Automative Conference in Detroit. Farley did not disclose any details about the upcoming F-series pickup trucks, other than that there will be both hybrid and all-electric variants.
It had been known for some time that there would be a hybrid variant. Ford has been working on a hybrid version of the F-150 for about three years. The electric pickup truck will compete with Tesla’s similar model, of which the automaker has only shown concept images so far. About a third of all Fords sold in the US are pickup trucks.
Earlier this week, Ford and Volkswagen announced an alliance. The cooperation will mainly concern the development and production of pick-up trucks, for which Ford, unlike VW, has large production capacity. However, the companies also want to collaborate on the development of electric vehicles and autonomous driving.
