The very first California-launched Bulli-based company, with 160,000 copies sold, became one of the most successful motorhomes worldwide. And all the experiences that Volkswagen Bedrijfswagens has done with the camper icon over the past three decades are now all used for the development of the Grand California. The new Grand California is based on the California XXL study model that was launched last year at the Caravan Salon.

In good California tradition, the Grand California also gets a light interior with lots of smart solutions. The light interior is mainly in white, which creates a fresh look and a spacious ambiance. And that feeling of space will be further enhanced by the large windows in the back and sides and the light domes in the back above the double bed and in the living area.

And a good night’s sleep is also thought. All windows have double plissés (hor and blackout). And for the driver’s cab, a newly developed eclipse concept will be available.

Technology

The Grand California is equipped with swivel chairs in the front and a two-seater sofa in the living area. The latter is combined with ISOFIX anchorages and Topteather protection for children. The kitchen consists of a retractable 70-liter refrigerator including freezer (also accessible from the outside via the sliding door), a two-burner gas cooker, a sink and a number of cupboards and drawers.

An innovative new feature is the optional Bluetooth-controlled speaker in the living area. It can therefore be used independently of the infotainment system to play music via a smartphone or tablet. Light switches are missing, the Grand California will come standard with motion detectors that switch on the lights.

The equipment of the Grand California contains many luxury and practical details. Outdoor lighting above the sliding door and a connection for an outdoor shower at the rear with adjustable water temperature. An electrically folding step under the sliding door facilitates entry and exit, while the sliding door is provided with a two-part screen in all cases. The Grand California also has a fresh water tank with a capacity of 110 liters.

An essential difference compared to the more compact California ‘T6’ is the bathroom of the Grand California (840 x 800 mm) . In addition to a toilet and shower, the wet room has, among other things, a fold-away washbasin, a towel rack, a cupboard with integrated toilet roll holder and a roof hatch for ventilation.

Options

The option list of the new camper van Volkswagen Bedrijfswagens includes a high bed for children, an integrated panorama roof, a canopy, a rear bike carrier and a table with chairs for outside. The standard gas heating can be replaced if required by a gas flow or diesel-flow heating system. Solar cells on the roof, satellite TV with satellite dish and an LTE WLAN hotspot (router) are also among the possibilities.

Safety first

Grand California will be delivered with the same assistance, comfort and infotainment systems that are also available for the Volkswagen Crafter. Examples of the driving assistants are Front Assist with emergency stop system in the city, Lane Assist, Blind Spot Sensor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and Rear View.
