Flitsmeister is testing dimming street lighting depending on how busy it is
A pilot has been started in Assen in which the street lighting is dimmed when it is quiet on the road and amplified when it is busier. This is a test by the municipality in collaboration with Flitsmeister and lamp maker Sustainder.
The trial is taking place on a route on Europaweg-Zuid, where 280 smart luminaires from Sustainder were already installed two years ago. The street lighting can be set according to the traffic density and to measure this, traffic data from Flitsmeister is used.
The use of dynamic lighting should improve traffic flow, promote safety and save energy. According to the initiators, the lighting can not only be adjusted to the crowds, but it is also possible to provide additional lighting when a car has broken down. This should increase the safety of those involved and emergency services in the event of traffic incidents.
Dimming schedules are already used on the relevant route. These schedules are optimized on the basis of Flitsmeister data. An initial analysis of traffic data would show that an adaptation of the schedule to the average traffic density leads to an average saving of 25 percent in energy consumption.
The project also includes another part that focuses on lighting for parking. Behind the town hall in Assen, Flitsmeister users will notice when they do a parking action in the app. In the parking zone, the lighting will then temporarily light up brighter. The two parts of the pilot have started and will run until the end of this year. The results are then evaluated and it is decided whether the applications will be used permanently.
