Fitbit drops lawsuit against Jawbone
Fitbit is no longer planning a legal battle with Jawbone. The case that was brought before the US International Trade Commission has been withdrawn by Fitbit, and therefore a possible import ban seems to have been removed.
Jawbone has informed Recode in a response that the case will not go ahead. The legal dispute revolved around Jawbone’s alleged patent infringement with its wearable fitness devices; that’s why Fitbit had applied to the International Trade Commission for an import ban. With the charges dropped, Jawbone doesn’t seem to have any fear that it can no longer sell its wearables in the United States.
The main reason for dropping the case is the fact that Jawbone’s fitness trackers are still barely being sold, Fitbit said in a request sent to the International Trade Commission. The company is also in a weak financial situation, so Fitbit no longer saw any benefit in the lawsuit.
It is not the first legal clash between Fitbit and Jawbone. Earlier this year, Fitbit won a lawsuit brought by Jawbone. Again, it was an alleged patent infringement, and by winning the case, Fitbit was able to continue selling its fitness trackers.
