Fisker announces electric SUV for less than $40,000
The American company Fisker Inc. announced a new electric car. It is an all-electric SUV that should go on sale for less than $40,000. This is designer Henrik Fisker’s new company; the designer previously made the Karma.
Fisker Inc. reports that the new SUV should be released in the second half of 2021 for less than $40,000. The company has not yet disclosed the exact price. The vehicle would have a range close to 482km. This is based on an ‘improved lithium-ion battery’ with a capacity of more than 80 kWh.
The company will not provide further details until the release is nearer. For the time being, the American manufacturer has only published a single image of the car. The company’s chief executive says the new SUV is intended to bring an “affordable electric car” to the market that is “more exciting” than what is currently available. The new vehicle will have four-wheel drive and two electric motors, with one motor driving the front wheels and the other motor driving the rear wheels.
The manufacturer says a drivable prototype should be ready by the end of this year and a production facility for the vehicle has yet to be built. Based on the latter, the 2021 release or the target price of under $40,000 seems on the optimistic side.
Henrik Fisker is best known for the Karma, a strikingly designed, relatively expensive electric sports car that has been on the market since 2012. The car is powered by an electric motor, but there is also a petrol engine that serves as a generator for the 20 kWh battery. This extends the electric range from 51 km to 370 km.
With the company Fisker Automotive, Henrik Fisker produced the Karma, but the design and production facility of this car came into Chinese hands in 2014. However, the designer retained the rights to the name and trademark, which led to the creation of the new company Fisker Inc in 2016.
