First quad-core Qualcomm processor benchmarks appear

The first benchmarks of Qualcomm’s first quad-core processor have come online. The quad-core Snapdragon S4 will arrive in new smartphones later this year. The processor is assisted by a more powerful GPU, among other things.

As a result, the performance is also graphically higher than that of devices with previous Qualcomm processors. The benchmarks appeared on the sites of Gl Benchmark and AnTuTu, among others. The LG E970 Eclipse seems to be getting an international release, although there is also a cdma version for the American provider Sprint, with the type number LS970. The Eclipse would have a 4.65″-720p screen and run on Android 4.0.

The Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 is a soc with four processor cores on Qualcomm’s new Krait core, which also forms the basis of the S4 MSM8260A from the HTC One S. The Krait processors are made with a 28nm process. TSMC, which manufactures the processors for Qualcomm, is struggling to keep up with demand for the S4; Qualcomm’s MSM8960 is the only processor for smartphones with an integrated LTE modem, which is why many manufacturers want to use the processor. The MSM8960 is included in the American versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity. Due to high demand, the HTC One S will be equipped with an older Snapdragon S3 processor this summer. However, this would be a faster S3 than what is included in the HTC Sensation XE.

The benchmarks show that the Adreno 320 GPU is more powerful than what is currently on the market, but the difference is not very big. However, the soc does not set an impressive score in AnTuTu; at just over 11,000 there is only a slight difference with the Nvidia Tegra 3, also a quadcore.
