‘First products with USB 4 will be on the market at the end of 2020’
The first products with USB 4 will be on the market by the end of 2020, the USB Promoter Group expects. The group is currently finalizing the specifications of the new connection standard.
The specifications of usb 4 have arrived at version 0.7. The USB Promoter Group is confident that the specifications will be finalized this summer. The first devices with USB 4 support could then be in the shops by the end of 2020. This reports the tech website AnandTech based on conversations with representatives of the USB Promoter Group.
USB 4 is based on Intel’s Thunderbolt 3 technology and achieves throughput speeds of up to 40Gbit/s. That comes down to doubling the speed of SuperSpeed 20Gbit/s, or the USB 3.2 2×2 specification. According to the USB Promoter Group, the difference with USB 3.2 is so great that a new logo is being considered.
USB 4 will be backwards compatible with existing devices with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3. The new standard also includes support for protocols such as displayport from Thunderbolt 3.
