The film adaptation of the popular game series from the 90s is primarily about the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, based on the photos. The film opens with an important part of the original game series: the blood feud between the Hanzo clan and the Bi-Han clan. The first ten minutes of the film are set in feudal Japan, reports Entertainment Weekly, which was the first to receive the photos of the film. That period is before Hanzo becomes Scorpion and Bi-Han the original Sub-Zero. Scorpion is played by Hiroyuki Sanada and Sub-Zero by Joe Taslim.

In addition to Sub-Zero and Scorpion, many other well-known characters from the original Mortal Kombat series can be seen: Liu Kang, played by Ludi Lin, Kung Lao, played by Max Huang, Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, Jax Briggs, played by Mechad Brooks, Sonya Blade, played by Jessica McNamee and Kano, played by Josh Lawson. The photos largely show the characters in their original outfits from the game series. The main character of the film is Cole Young.

The film should be released in cinemas and on streaming service HBO Max in mid-April. Mortal Kombat is directed by Simon McQuoid. The Australian director has no other major films to his name, but is a well-known advertiser. He has already made a number of short promotional videos for games, including Call of Duty WWII, the Playstation 3 and Halo 3.
