First backup loader for Wii U released

Loadiine, the first backup loader for the Wii U, was released by the Frenchman Golden45. The backup loader is capable of reading the files normally found on a Wii U disc from an SD card. Loadiine does not work with all Wii U titles.

Earlier reports about Golden45’s backup loader reported that Loadiine could only read smaller sets of files because the backup was still loaded via the network. The Frenchman seems to have partly solved this with version 1.0 of the backup loader. To deploy Loadiine, users will need a Wii U with firmware version 5.3.2, an SD card with up to 32GB capacity, and a copy of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U required.

Loadiine works, among other things, by means of an exploit in the browser of the console. When the backup loader is loaded via the browser, users can access it by navigating to the Mii Maker. There Loadiine opens and users can indicate which backup on the SD card they want to start. After that, users will have to play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and instead of that game, start up the designated backup. SSBU is used because that game has extended access to the sd card.

Due to limitations on how large certain backup files can be, not all Wii U backups work. The users of the gbatemp.net forum have therefore prepared a compatibility list. The use of so-called homebrew, or self-written software, is not yet possible on the Wii U. Nintendo can close the holes in the firmware that allow the loading of backups with an update, but it can only force users to install such updates by providing them with new games.
