Synology is developing version 3.0 of Disk Station Manager, the management software that runs on several of the company’s NAS products, and has now released a beta release of it. The Disk, Cube and Rack Stations offer more than just extra storage space. They can also make backups of all clients on the network and download files via http, ftp, bittorrent, usenet and emule, so that, for example, the energy-hungry PC can be turned off at night, while the download just comes in. Furthermore, audio and video files can be streamed over the network via the built-in iTunes server, a dynamic website can be hosted using PHP and MySQL and it can act as a print server.

Version 3.0 brings a large number of changes. For example, the user interface is now multi-tasking and all tasks and applications run in their own window within the same web browser screen. Furthermore, it is easier to stream photos and music to an iPhone or Android device, there is support for the ext4 filesystem which makes it possible to create volumes up to 20TB and DSM 3.0 is fully ipv6 compliant.
