Synology has released a new beta version of Disk Station Manager, the management software that runs on the company’s various NAS products. The Disk, Cube and Rack drives offer more than just extra storage space. They can also make backups of all clients on the network and download files via http, ftp or bittorrent, so that, for example, the PC can be turned off at night while the download is still coming in. Furthermore, audio and video files can be streamed over the network via the built-in iTunes server, a dynamic website can be hosted using PHP and Mysql, and it can act as a print server.

A lot of new features have been added to the new 700 series of DSM 2.0. For example, the models with four hard drives can now use raid-6, the smart information from hard drives can be read, multiple backup tasks can be scheduled and the download manager can also handle eMule and nzb files. In version 2.0-0717, which has been labeled ‘Quasi Official’ and can therefore be considered a release candidate, only bug fixes can be found for issues found in the beta. If all goes well, we can expect the final release on September 15th. Below are the release notes for this version:
