Sony released new firmware for its Playstation 3 game console on Thursday. The firmware has been given version number 2.17 and is approximately 120MB in size. You therefore need the same amount of free space on the hard disk of the Playstation 3 as updates are made from ‘system update’. Burning to a CD or DVD is of course also possible, after which the update can be carried out via ‘update PC’. What exactly has changed in this release is not entirely clear. The release notes only speak of an ‘improved stability’:

• The stability of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.

Remark:

• This system software update includes all features from previous versions.
• The new system software saves all settings previously entered on the PLAYSTATION 3 system. Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play the game until you update the PS3 system software.
• Do not update with data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment via network or disc. In addition, do not perform updates other than as described in the product description or on this website. If an update is performed using data from another source, by any other means, or with a PS3 system that has been tampered with in any way, the PS3 system may not function properly and the official update data may not be installed . Any of these actions may void the PS3 system’s warranty and may mean that you may not be eligible for warranty repairs and services from Sony Computer Entertainment.
