Lite-On has released a new firmware for the SOHW-812S DVD burner. The update is numbered 0A and via this link to take down. Thanks to this firmware, it is possible to change the book type of a DVD, so that the disc can also be read by older players. 0A’s release notes leave the following notes:

Most DVD players that can’t read DVD+RW or DVD+R discs are the older models. This version firmware allows users to modify the BookType setting of a DVD recordable media, thus enhancing the media read compatibility in older DVD playback devices.
