Firewatch developer’s new game has been paused by other Valve projects
In the Valley of Gods, the new game from Firewatch developer Campo Santo, has been put on hold. The studio was acquired by Valve in 2018 and co-founder Jake Rodkin confirms that the game will not be released for the time being, as the developers are working on other Valve games.
The former Campo Santo developers are now working at Valve on Half-Life: Alyx, Dota Underlords, but also on Steam and other projects, Rodkin said in a statement to Polygon. As a result, work on In the Valley of the Gods has come to a standstill. Some employees were initially said to have lent a helping hand with Valve’s new VR game, and they are now working full-time on that project. The experience with first-person adventure games would come in handy in the development of Half-Life: Alyx.
Rodkin says In the Valley of Gods won’t be out this year in any case. When it was announced in 2017, it was stated that the game would be released in 2019. A new release date has not been announced. The game is now on Steam with a ‘Thorough’ designation. There seem to be no concrete plans for the further development of In the Valley of Gods. In the statement, Rodkin says it is a project they “may return to.” If that happens, more will be announced.
Campo Santo was a small studio with twelve employees and released the adventure game Firewatch in 2016. The game received good reviews and sold a million copies. A year later, the developer announced In the Valley of Gods, a first-person adventure game set in Egypt in 1920.
In April 2018, Campo Santo was acquired by Valve. At the time, it was announced that the employees would be working on Valve projects, but that they would also continue with their new game. Campo Santo then stated that the acquisition would have no consequences for the development of In the Valley of Gods.
