Firefox is testing new video features and tracking protection in Test Pilot
Mozilla has added three new features to its Test Pilot program, testing experimental features. For example, it adds tracking protection to normal windows and a new feature lets users watch videos floating above the page.
Mozilla writes that until now, the tracking protection was only enabled in Private Browsing mode. Now the organization is testing this feature in normal Firefox windows as well. In its own words, Mozilla is taking this step to “examine where the feature is causing problems on web pages, so that it can be improved for all users.” Another new feature is called ‘Min Vid’. It allows Firefox users to watch YouTube and Vimeo videos while visiting other pages. The videos remain visible by hovering above the page.
A third trial concerns the Page Shot feature, which allows users to take screenshots of web pages. They must then also be able to find them, for example on the basis of the title or text shown in the image. In addition, from within the feature, Firefox users can share the screenshots with others.
The company introduced tracking protection in 2015. This feature blocks tracking cookies, which allow websites to track users. It was already possible to use the protection outside of the browser’s private mode by applying certain settings. The Test Pilot program was also launched in 2015. To participate in the trials, an add-on and a Firefox account are required.
