Firefox 86 gets support for AVIF file format

The new stable version of Firefox gets support for images in the AVIF format. It was already in a nightly version, but support for the image compression will also come to the final version at the end of February.

The code has been pushed from the experimental nightly version to the stable release of Firefox 86. That version will be released on February 23. Users were previously able to manually enable AVIF support. Only Chrome still supports the format in Chromium. So do other Chromium browsers such as Edge and Brave. It doesn’t work on Android yet.

AVIF is an image file format. AVIF can add compression via the AOMedia Video 1 or AV1 algorithm. Images are made much smaller without much loss of quality; in most cases, images will be half the size of WebP images and a quarter the size of a JPEG image.
