Firefox 69 gets an integrated password generator
Mozilla will provide Firefox with a built-in password generator from version 69. The tech site gHacks discovered the new feature in Firefox Nightly, the unstable testing and development platform for the browser. Firefox 69 is scheduled for September 3, 2019.
The integrated password generator is part of a series of changes to make Firefox’s password manager more functional. Some of those improvements already debuted in Firefox 67, the current version, at the end of May. Since then, for example, it is also possible to save passwords when surfing in a private window.
When the user visits a website with Firefox 69 where an account has to be created, the browser will generate a random and secure password. When the user accepts Firefox’s suggestion, the password is automatically saved in the password manager.
gHacks notes that the password generator in Firefox Nightly is not enabled by default. Users can activate the function themselves via the Privacy & Security section. In the current version the possibilities of the generator according to gHacks are still quite limited. For example, users cannot set how long the password should be and which character set should be used.
Incidentally, Mozilla has urged Firefox users to update their browsers as soon as possible with Firefox 67.0.3 and Firefox ESR 60.7.1. According to the company, this fixes a serious bug that would allow hackers to take over vulnerable systems. Mozilla says it is aware of targeted attacks that exploit this vulnerability.
