‘Fintechbank’ Bunq has been struggling with Ddos attack since Sunday afternoon – update
‘Fintechbank’ Bunq has been suffering from a DDoS attack since Sunday afternoon. The bank is working to fend off the attack and is just trying to keep the services working. At the time of writing, the bank’s site does not always load and the app sometimes refuses to work.
Bunq informs its customers via a support topic and on Twitter. The attack is said to have started just before 1 p.m. It is still unknown exactly how large the scale of the attack is and who is behind it.
In September Bunq also had to contend with a DDoS attack for a day or two. At that time, the bank was also less accessible. However, the perpetrator of that attack has come forward in the meantime and the differences between the two parties seem to have been settled, so it seems unlikely that the same person is behind it this time. At the time, the company also stated that it had ‘serious anti-ddos equipment’ for filtering and diverting traffic.
Update, 17:20: Bunq founder Ali Niknam informed by telephone that the obstacles for customers had been removed one and a half hours after the start of the attack, but that the attack itself continues unabated in the background. While the ddos knockdown equipment would otherwise be adequate, a bug in the FreeBSD network stack meant that the attack could still take effect in those hour and a half as it took time to redirect traffic.
