Final Qualcomm compensation to BlackBerry amounts to EUR 841 million

The final amount Qualcomm must pay to BlackBerry is $940 million. Converted that is about 841 million euros. That is the result of a binding arbitration procedure between the two companies, which was brought by BlackBerry.

BlackBerry reports that it has reached an agreement with Qualcomm on the final amount, which must be paid by May 31. The amount includes attorney’s fees and interest. In April, it was announced that the minimum amount that Qualcomm had to pay would be about $ 815 million. However, the final amount had not yet been determined.

At the time, Qualcomm said the case was over royalties paid by the Canadian company. These are fees that the Canadian company paid to the chip designer per ‘subscriber unit’ between 2010 and 2015. It is unclear what exactly BlackBerry paid the royalties for, possibly for use of patents or parts. Qualcomm said at the time it disagreed with the decision. As this was an arbitration, no appeal was possible.

It was also announced on Friday that Qualcomm’s shareholders have filed a lawsuit against the company, partly because of the way the company released the Snapdragon 810-soc. In addition, the chipmaker is involved in other lawsuits and competition investigations.
