FCC wants emergency center to be able to find out on which floor the caller is located

The American telecom watchdog FCC wants the emergency center to be able to find out on which floor a caller is located. A proposal from the FCC would require more data from callers, including a “vertical location.”

That is stated in a proposal made public by the FCC. That proposal indicates that providers must provide more information to the emergency center that can be reached via the telephone number 911, so that it can be determined with more certainty where the caller is located. This would mainly concern the height at which the caller is located, so that it can be established more quickly on which floor the relevant person is located.

Should the plans go ahead, the new rules will become mandatory from April 2021. However, the FCC’s plans must first go through an approval cycle, although it is believed that the green light will be given.

It is already mandatory for mobile providers in the United States to send location data to the emergency center. However, it was not yet possible to determine the location of the caller in height with the current regulations.
