FC Groningen wants to double solar panels on stadium through crowdfunding
FC Groningen has plans to double the number of solar panels on the roof of the Euroborg stadium. Interested parties can purchase a share for 550 euros, on which they receive approximately 2.5 percent interest. The football club wants to generate 240,000 kWh annually.
The plan was set up by Essent, the 1millionwatt foundation and FC Groningen, the three parties have announced. In total, 561 extra solar panels have to be placed on the roof of the Euroborg stadium, which would more than double the number of panels.
Crowdfunding is being considered to pay for the installation of the solar panels. For 550 euros, investors can buy a share, on which they receive interest. This depends on how much power is generated and what happens to energy prices, but is probably around 2.5 percent. After 24 years, the investors also get their investment back. With the project, FC Groningen hopes to generate approximately 240,000 kWh each year.
Since February, 535 solar panels have been generating electricity on the roof of the Euroborg. Crowdfunding was also used for this: in December, the club reported that more than 200 investors were willing to contribute to the installation of the panels. Then FC Groningen already announced that there might be a second round.
