The team behind the Halo fangame Installation 01 announced this week that it has received approval from Microsoft subsidiary 343 Industries to develop its game. There would be no danger of the project having to be shut down for legal reasons.

In a blog post, the team writes that for several months it had mainly one-sided contact with 343 Industries, named after the Halo character 343 Guilty Spark. Nevertheless, there was eventually a reaction from the company, which resulted in an actual meet and greet. As a result, the company said the fan project may continue as long as there are no commercial targets. The team has therefore decided not to accept any donations. In addition, the project must strictly adhere to Microsoft’s game content usage rules.

This stipulates, for example, that no reverse engineering may take place, that content may not be used to make something vulgar or obscene and that nothing may be earned. For example, there will be no Installation 01 merchandise, according to the team. As long as the project follows these rules, there would be no danger of it having to be terminated for legal reasons.

Installation 01 should be free to play on Windows, macOS and Linux and is built using Unity 5. The game aims to mimic the ‘experience’ of Halo 2 and 3 in combination with elements of Combat Evolved and Reach.
