Version 1.0 of AM2R, which stands for Another Metroid 2 Remake, has been released. The remake was created by an enthusiast of the game who made it available on the thirtieth anniversary of Metroid. The remake has been in development for ten years.

Metroid was released on August 6, 1986 and celebrated its 30th anniversary this past weekend. Nintendo paid no attention to the milestone itself, but the fans behind the AM2R project chose the 1.0 release date of their remake. The Windows version is now available and a Linux version should follow later.

AM2R is a remake of Metroid 2: Return of Samus, a game that came out in the US in 1991 for the Game Boy and came to Europe a year later. The original game had no color, just monochrome image. For the remake, the game has been completely rebuilt, in color. The graphical style and gameplay is similar to that of Metroid: Zero Mission for the Game Boy Advance.

The makers of AM2R say they are not afraid that Nintendo will intervene and put a stop to the project. Argentinian Milton Guasti, who announced the project in 2008, told NintendoNews that Nintendo never contacted him and so did not ask him to stop making the remake. He states that AM2R respects Nintendo as the owner of the rights and that he does not make any money from the remake.
