The story of Fallout 4 begins before the major nuclear war that is central to the series, Todd Howard, director of the game revealed. He said that development on part 4 started immediately after the release of Fallout 3 in 2009.

Publisher Bethesda released more details about the game during E3. Fallout 4 will have an extensive crafting and building system, among other things. Players can collect items and waste and build weapons and shelters with them. They can also strengthen their Power Armor. Bethesda also showcased the options for customizing the protagonist, including the option to choose a wife.

Bethesda is releasing a Collectors Edition of the game that will cost $120 and will come with a working Pip-Boy. Fallout 4 will be released on November 10 for PC, Xbox One and PS4, but Bethesda has immediately published the iOS game Fallout Shelter. In it, the player runs a Vault and must keep the inhabitants alive. For now, that mobile game is only for iOS; an Android version is in the works.
