Fake Cuphead for iOS appears in App Store – update
A fake version of the game Cuphead has been released for iOS. The game will not come out on Apple’s mobile operating system at all. Game studio MDHR is working on removing the game from Apple’s download store.
The fake version of Cuphead is 1.91GB in size and appeared on Monday, according to the App Store page. It can still be accessed via the desktop, but shows an error message on iOS. StudioMDHR is listed as a developer, but MDHR announces on Twitter nothing to do with the release of the game. The game costs 5.49 euros in the App Store.
The support site listed on the App Store page does not lead to the game studio site, but to a website created in October. Cuphead came out in September. A whois search leads to someone from the ostensibly British company Sheridon Ltd who is said to live in ‘Wasinghton’. The zip code is an area right next to the White House in Washington. The site is hosted through a Hungarian platform. How it can happen that Apple allowed the fake version of a well-known game in the App Store is still unclear.
MDHR previously said that Cuphead would remain a game that only appears on Microsoft platforms, with the game studio excluding a release on iOS. Cuphead has only been released for the Microsoft platforms Windows and Xbox One. Cuphead was released this fall and the developer sold a million copies of the game within two weeks. Recently, a fake app from the MyEtherWallet service also appeared in the app store, which was subsequently removed.
Update, 16:06: Apple appears to have removed the fake version from the App Store.
