Fairphone 2 will receive its last Android update in March after seven years
The 2015 Fairphone 2 will receive its last software update in March. The makers then give the device a final Android 10 update, but after that there will be no more bug or security fixes for the device.
The latest update is coming according to the makers in March this year. Afterwards, the phone will still be usable, but without new bug fixes and without new security updates. The makers warn against using apps that contain sensitive data. The makers also say that there will probably come a time when apps from third parties such as banks will no longer work.
Fairphone says it will continue to sell certain spare parts for the device for the time being. The company calls that stock finite, but does not say when it expects to no longer have parts available.
The company also reminds users that they can use alternative operating systems such as LineageOS or /e/OS. These are still supported. Users can also return their device to Fairphone for a voucher that gives them a discount on a new device.
The Fairphone 2 came onto the market in October 2015. This means that the device has received more than seven years of updates, which is very long for Android devices.
