Facebook shows ‘recent conversations’ in search results
Facebook has released a new functionality that allows users to see recent, public comments in search results. This is what the social networking site calls Latest Conversations, and it shows, among other things, how many people are talking about a certain topic.
TechCrunch was one of the first to notice the new functionality. According to the technology website, Latest Conversations should put more emphasis on what other people are saying about a particular topic, and that should help, among other things, to expose people to opinions that fall outside their own ‘bubble’.
The examples that TechCrunch shows show that Facebook shows recent, public messages that other users have posted about searched topics. It also shows how many people worldwide are talking about that subject. Anyone looking for content will also see posts in languages other than their own native language.
The new search functionality is not yet available to everyone, but will probably be released in phases for Facebook users. In the previous version of the search engine, the emphasis was mainly on finding people, and pages of companies and institutions.
Facebook has recently been criticized for contributing to the spread of fake news and trapping people in their own ‘filter bubble’. In recent times, the social networking site has announced several initiatives to combat fake news, including fact-checking content. Facebook now has nearly 2 billion active users.
