Facebook has stopped a campaign aimed at influencing public opinion in the run-up to the mid-term elections for the US Congress in November.

Nepaccounts Facebook

In total there were 17 Facebook profiles, eight Facebook pages and seven Instagram accounts belonging to the campaign. They were discovered two weeks ago. The congressmen have already been informed of the fake accounts earlier this week.

Russian trolls

The investigation into the source of the accounts is under way. Facebook works together with the FBI for this. Congressmen are already pointing their finger at Russia. In 2016, the presidential elections were influenced by a Russian troll factory. Some 126 million Americans saw this campaign. Since then, Facebook is trying to track down false accounts, also through Artificial Intelligence.

Earlier this year, Facebook has already removed millions of fake accounts. These have been detected using AI tools.
