Facebook releases Messenger apps for Windows and macOS

Facebook has released desktop apps for its Messenger service on Windows and macOS. Until now, Messenger could be used via mobile apps or via the browser, and the Windows app was limited compared to the mobile variants.

With the arrival of Messenger’s new app for macOS and Windows, Facebook says users “don’t have to keep an eye on their browser every time they expect a call from their friends.” The release follows an increase in use of Messenger: due to the measures due to the corona virus, the use of Messenger on desktop via browsers worldwide last month.

The programs enable group conversations and support notifications on the operating systems. In addition, the desktop programs support dark mode display. Furthermore, they offer the same functionality as the mobile apps, the promise is, including use of emojis and gifs.

There was already a version of Facebook Messenger for Windows 10, but the new version was built entirely from the ground up based on Electron and the app is now almost identical to the mobile versions in terms of functionality.
