Facebook: Quest 2 outsells all previous Oculus headsets combined
The Oculus Quest 2 outsells all previous Oculus headsets combined. So says Andrew Bosworth, the CEO of Facebook Reality Labs. However, Facebook does not disclose how many copies have been sold.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Bosworth says that Quest 2, which has been on the market for less than six months, has sold more units than all previous Oculus headsets combined. That’s not just about the first Quest, but also the Rift, the Rift S and the Oculus Go. According to Bosworth, the latest headset is now also starting to reach the mainstream audience, while the earlier VR headsets mainly ended up with early adopters.
Oculus released its Rift headset in 2016. The Oculus Go followed in 2018 and the first Quest and Rift S were released in 2019. The Oculus Quest 2 was released in October 2020, which offers high-quality specifications for a low price, but requires a Facebook account.
At the beginning of this year, analyst firm SuperData calculated that 1.1 million units of the Quest 2 were sold in the fourth quarter of last year. The Rift and Rift S are said to have sold about 55,000 copies in the same time frame. Last year, Facebook announced that the Rift will be out of production and that there will be no successor. Facebook will only make headsets that also work standalone.
