Facebook introduces standalone web version of Messenger

Facebook has created a standalone web version for Facebook Messenger. It is accessible without a user having to open Facebook. Earlier, Facebook already came up with stand-alone Messenger apps for mobile platforms.

The standalone web app can be reached via the new domain Messenger.com. Users must log in with their Facebook credentials, but can then chat with their contacts without going to Facebook. The Messenger function can also be called from Facebook.

Facebook already came with stand-alone apps for Messenger on Android, iOS and Windows Phone. Some time after the release of those apps, Facebook removed the Messenger functionality from the Facebook application. Whether Facebook plans to do something similar with the web version of Facebook is unknown. Facebook scrapped the standalone version of Messenger for desktops last year.

Research from Pew Research shows that Facebook is still popular among teenagers. The American research, which focuses only on use in the United States, shows that Facebook is by far the most popular social network with 71 percent, Recode writes.
