Facebook introduces rewards program for reporting data abuse

Facebook is introducing a data abuse bounty program, which, according to the company, is intended to protect the data of Facebook users. It is not entirely clear what amounts people who make reports can expect.

Facebook says the amount of the compensation is based on the impact of an individual report. There is no maximum amount set for the reports, although the company states that fees for reports under its existing bug bounty program can sometimes reach as much as $40,000; converted that is 32,347 euros.

According to Facebook, the program was created to encourage people to report when apps collect user data and pass the data on to malicious parties. If so, Facebook says it will remove the app in question from the platform. In addition, it wants to conduct an audit and, if necessary, will initiate legal proceedings against the company behind the app or other parties.

Facebook promises to review all legitimate reports and act quickly if there is a “credible threat” to user data. If the data is misused, it will also notify affected individuals. Facebook announced expanding its bug bounty program in March, along with other measures.
