Facebook buys app for adding effects to faces in videos
Facebook has bought Msqrd, an app for adding effects to faces in photos and videos. It is obvious that the social network wants to add the functions of the app to videos on the social network.
The apps for iOS and Android can still be installed and used for the time being, says Eugene Nevgen, director of the Belarusian company. Msqrd has 3D face tracking technology in real-time, which makes it possible to apply filters over live videos in a precise manner, leaving the mask over the face.
Facebook has confirmed the acquisition, but has not said how much money is involved in the acquisition. Msqrd caught the eye after it added a filter featuring Leonardo di Caprio winning an Oscar. Despite this, the apps don’t seem to have attracted too much attention. In the Play Store, the app has between 5000 and 10,000 installs.
The social network supposedly wants to add Msqrd’s technology to its video feature so that users can use live filters over real-time video. The company behind Msqrd has been around since last year.
