Europe introduces certification as a measure against poor security devices
The European Commission will announce measures later this year to address the poor security of internet-of-things devices, such as internet-connected cameras and digital video recorders. The Commission sees the poor security of such devices as a problem.
European Commissioner Andrus Ansip says in a statement published on Wednesday that European countries must work together to face this new form of online threats. Ansip was referring to the ddos attacks that used a botnet with iot devices, such as Mirai’s.
Ansip gave few details, but says the European Commission will come up with a system of certificates and labels later this year to ensure the security of IoT devices. It is likely that the Commission will come up with standards that devices will have to comply with in the field of security.
The malware that turns the IoT devices into bots in a botnet can often run its course, because many manufacturers and consumers pay little attention to the security of such devices.
