Eurogamer: Nintendo stops production of Wii U
Nintendo will stop production of the Wii U next Friday, Eurogamer sources said. The console has shipped 13.36 million units to date and that number won’t grow much more if Nintendo does stop production.
When production stops, the Wii U will be known as Nintendo’s worst-selling console. For example, according to Eurogamer, the GameCube has sold 21 million times by comparison and the Wii 101 million times. Last Monday was said to have been the deadline for the final orders for the Wii U. “Only a small amount” of orders were said to have been placed.
Eurogamer has proven to be reliable when it comes to Nintendo leaks. For example, before the official announcement, the site was right about the portability of the Nintendo Switch, the fact that it uses cartridges and other details.
Nintendo has the successor to the Wii U ready. The Nintendo Switch was unveiled late last month and will be something of a hybrid console. On the one hand, the Switch can be docked to a TV and serve as a conventional console, and on the other hand, the Switch can be detached and work as a handheld when two controller parts are attached on either side.
Under the hood, the Switch has a custom GPU from Nvidia based on the Pascal generation, but neither Nintendo nor Nvidia will disclose more technical details. Eurogamer’s sources say the screen will be 6.2″ in size, touch-enabled and feature a 720p resolution. Nintendo will announce the Switch’s pricing and other information on January 12.
