Epson has started mass production and supply of an LCD panel that can be used for electronic viewfinders in cameras. The 0.66″ diagonal module has a resolution of 1400×1050 pixels and is presumably already used in the Leica SL.

The LCD module with type number L3FJ63800C uses a TN panel with a diameter of 0.66″. The maximum brightness is 650cd/m2 and the panel can display 98 percent of the sRGB color space according to Epson.

Camera manufacturers indicate the resolution of the digital viewfinders in their cameras by the number of sub-pixels. Currently, most high-end cameras with EVF offer a total of 2.36 million sub-pixels, which corresponds to a resolution of 1024×768 pixels. The new Epson module has 4.41 million sub-pixels: the result of 1400×1050 pixels times the number of red, green and blue pixels.

Leica probably already uses the LCD module, currently the Leica SL is the only camera on the market that has a viewfinder with 4.41 million pixels. The camera manufacturer itself does not indicate where the panel from the EVF comes from, but as far as is known there are no other manufacturers that make a comparable LCD module.

Now that Epson has started mass production of the LCD module, we can probably expect several cameras in 2016 that will be equipped with an EVF with 1400×1050 pixels. Olympus, among others, has previously used Epson’s LCDs in its cameras.
