Epic makes Fortnite cross-platform software available to developers for free
Epic Games has decided to make Fortnite’s cross-platform software available to developers for free. The software includes features such as login and matchmaking. The software will be released in mid-2019.
Epic Games reports that the software is suitable for all platforms, all engines and any digital store. According to the developer, the features can be combined with software from other parties. A developer kit will be released around Q3 2019 that will include Epics online services with Unreal Engine and Unity integration. Epic’s online services run through Amazon Web Services.
The software will be made available first for the PC and for other platforms during the third and fourth quarters of 2019. During that period, the rest of the features will be released in phases, such as in-game voice chat and external storage. It is not yet known on which platform or via which channel the service will be offered. The developer says it will provide more information in the coming months.
Electronic Arts announced in October that it was offering a somewhat similar service called Project Atlas. This is an online platform for game developers who can use tools, artificial intelligence and the Frostbite engine to make games, for example. It is not yet known when this service will be available or whether it will be free to use.
