Epic Online Services is making its Easy Anti-Cheat tool available for Linux and macOS. This move will allow popular free-to-play games such as Apex Legends and War Thunder to be released on Valve’s Steam Deck.

Until now, Easy Anti-Cheat was only available for Windows, so games that use it won’t work on other platforms. Epic Online Services is now bringing the tool to all PC platforms. The new SDK is available immediately for Linux and macOS. Epic also adds support for Wine and Proton so developers can easily customize their Windows games.

Earlier, Epic already made the use of Easy Anti-Cheat free. The anti-cheat tool has been in the hands of Epic since 2018, after the acquisition of the Finnish Kamu. Many popular games use the tool. In addition to Apex Legends and War Thunder, these include Dead by Daylight, Fall Guys, Black Desert, Hunt: Showdown and the Halo Master Chief Collection.

Epic’s move is a positive development for Valve. Now that Easy Anti-Cheat is available for Linux, developers who use it can also release their games on the Steam Deck handheld console.

It remains to be seen whether Epic’s own Fortnite can also come to the Steam Deck. That game uses BattlEye in addition to Easy Anti-Cheat and that software is not available for Linux. Other popular games that use BattlEye are PUBG, Destiny 2, and Rainbow Six: Siege.
