The number of monthly active users of the Epic Games Store has grown to 61 million. The games store itself attributes this to the marketing campaign The Vault, in which GTA V was recently given away for free.
Epic does not say exactly what the increase in the number of monthly active users due to the recent giveaways. In a press release, two marketing companies that have partnered with the Epic Games Store call the campaign a success. The games store peaked at 13 million concurrently active users. It may have been that when GTA V was free to download, the games store was overloaded for some time.
Early this year, Epic said its Games Store has 108 million total users. Then the company said nothing about monthly active users. It is not known how many accounts there are now in total. Epic is able to persuade many gamers to use its store by giving away free games. Whether Epic also manages to bind those users for a longer period of time remains to be seen.
Steam still has many more users. According to Valve, there were 95 million monthly active users last year. The peak in the number of concurrently active Steam users is more than 24.5 million, according to unofficial figures from SteamDB. That was in March this year.
