Epic Games Settles Fortnite and Rocket League Loot Boxes
Epic Games has reached a settlement in a lawsuit over loot boxes in Fortnite and Rocket League. All American players of the games who have bought loot boxes can receive compensation for this, both money and in-game content.
It concerns a class action lawsuit brought by a group of players of Epic’s games. The game developer has now reached a settlement with the accusers, according to a statement on their website. The settlement applies to American players of Fortnite: Save the World and Rocket League. Epic Games sold random loot boxes in there, where players could pay to buy upgrades or skins without knowing in advance what was inside. The prosecutors stated that it was unknown what business they would get by buying a loot box, and that the chance of winning was not known in advance.
Epic removed the loot boxes from Fortnite and Rocket League in 2019. There is criticism of that, because the price went up. Under the settlement terms, U.S. players who purchased a loot box between July 2015 and the time the sale ended can receive compensation. Fortnite players get a thousand V-Bucks anyway, and Rocket League players a thousand Credits. Epic will automatically transfer it to players who have purchased a Loot Llama or Crate loot box. Under the settlement, Epic will also distribute $26.5 million or $21.8 million among players.
Players can still join the settlement to claim the compensation. They can then receive fifty dollars or 13,500 V-Bucks or 13,000 Rocket League Credits.
